Flock and Trixbox
Posted by admin on July 3rd, 2006 filed in UncategorizedAnd once again, I’m here with another bit on the world of tech.
Slashdot recently held an article on Flock and, being the curious person I am, I decided to bring it up and check it out. Here is my review on this great web browser:
Flock is a Mozilla based web browser that has been expanded to include blogging, photosharing, advanced search and news, and favorites sharing. It’s identical to firefox in every aspect (Since they are both from Mozilla) but has these few new features.
Basically, the review is pretty simple: If you like firefox and you do blogging or share photos on flickr, then flock is for you. It makes it easier to make your posts and sharing adjustments because you don’t have to navigate to your services websites. Rather, you just open windows that are part of the browser.
One big part of Flock is the drop bar at the bottom where you can store pics and text for later inclusion into, say, a blog. Makes it rather nice to collect information for your blogs audience or maybe pics you’d like to share and then include it easily.
In fact, I plan on using this feature for the next part of my entry on Trixbox.
Trixbox is a project that combines two open source projects into a unique solution to a complex problem. http://www.centos.org/
is a lightweight OS Enterprise Operating system (Tack a “Community” on the front and you’ve got CentOS). Asterisk is a leading project that allows you to create a PBX (Private Branch Exchange), essentially allowing you to create your own telephone network. Since all you need is any intel PC with 256 MB of Ram and about a 400 mhz processor for a hobby system (More for bigger systems, of course) then you can create one very inexpensively. I set it up in about one hour with a 400 Mhz Intel Celeron processor with 512 mb of RAM. From here, once it’s plugged into your network, you’ve got yourself a Voip server and a regular analog network hookup (assuming, of course, that you’ve got an appropriate card for it). Pretty simpleWell, I’m done for the day.
