One Week

Wow – it’s been a crazy week. I’m bound to miss something, but I’ll at least go for a decent post. Really, the big events of the week were my wonderful birthday celebration (wonderful in great measure because of my friends, who love and take care of me very much, and my family, who love me very much and would take care of me if I were living at home, but I’m away), getting an iPod for work (And yes, I enjoy it as more than just a platform: it is so choice; if you have the means I would highly recommend picking one up), taking my first exam, going to the top of the SWKT with Christie to discover you can’t actually get to the top and there is only one window that’s not behind locked doors, getting my mission call to the Czech Republic, Prague, Czech speaking mission (Bahahah – I’m so excited!), finishing a work of Kierkegaard, and a fun saturday. In the midst of all this, I finished opening my new businesses’ checking account, started hiring developers, pulled on a new graphic designer on retainer, and kept putting off my website revisions that I need to do but keep forgetting about.

So saturday: We have a tradition here at Wyview, that the occupants of apartments 133 and 121, if their names are Brent, Nathan, Christie, and Mikayla, must have breakfast every saturday in apartment 133. We sustain this tradition wholeheartedly and have sampled a wide range of dishes ranging from german pancakes to belgian waffles. Saturday we prepared French Crepes with Nutella, bananas, and whipped cream. If you haven’t tried them, you must (Go to http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/Cookbook:Crêpe). So, the crepes turned out wonderfully, and it soon became time to leave for the football game. The game itself was a little on the slow side, but our group that we sit with is a blast so I don’t mind. We even resurrected some old high school cheers that are much better than the stock “BYU Cougars” or “Defense cougars Defense!” cheers…immortal chants like “Ooooh CHILLELE!” and “Bone Saw! Bone Saw!” (Imagine a swiping motion across the left forearm in the fashion of sawing through something and you’ll get the idea). It’s gratifying to get the student section started chanting at your suggestion.

We went home, I had a two hour conference call to plan out the next three weeks or so, and then it was time to make french onion soup for dinner. We invited the ladies over to enjoy this fine, economical dish, and I prepared it entirely by myself (The Crepes were mixed by Nate that morning and I did the cooking, but dinner was all mine). I did take a leaf out of my cooking training with Dad (The all knowing source of culinary wisdom, including questionably healthy improvements) by adding extra butter and some sodium rich beef base to the final product. Naturally, it tasted better after I was done with it. The garlic toast (made from bakery breadsticks) was lightly broiled with mozzarella and came out of the oven steaming hot. Combined with the salad contributed by Christie and Mikayla, dinner was impeccably good.

We broke out the stereo and Nate’s (my) Macbook Pro to watch Ferris Bueler’s Day Off. Dane and James invited themselves over, and we all enjoyed root beer floats about 45 minutes into the film. And Sage dropped in, which was very unexpected but always welcome. I love it here. :)

Today (Sunday) has been a long day, however. Between setting up the home teaching organization, extending 9 callings, ward council, talking in sacrament, conducting meetings, and getting the morality lesson from the Bishop, one could properly quote the immortal phrase from R. A. Anderson, “Like a shotgun to the face.” BLAM! I recline here in bed now, tapping out this blog post, knowing full well that I’m still alive and have expended every ounce of energy I can muster in a day. That’s a feeling of satisfaction, one that I’ve felt before on many (most) days, and that I appreciate as the hallmark of a “job well done.” Tomorrow, I will try to relax…in the midst of Chem, Physics, and reading 100 pages of Kierkegaard. Wow, I’m a slacker. :P
