Wearing out

I believe that when one acts under the influence of the spirit he will be sustained. But lately, I’ve been remembering the story of Spencer W. Kimball who was touring a California mission. A room had been prepared upstairs, and President Kimball (who was undoubtedly acting and surviving because of the spirit’s guidance) retired to his room that night. The mission president, passing the room as he locked doors and dimmed lights for the evening, paused as he heard a voice coming from behind the door. The prophet was praying! Succumbing to the temptation and his own curiosity, he lingered a moment and pressed his ear to the door. In heartfelt supplication, the Prophet could be heard praying to his Father. The Mission President focused his hearing, hoping to hear a marvelous conversation with the Divine. He was more surprised than disappointed when all he heard was, “Dear father, Spencer is tired and would like a good rest. Amen.”

Whether or not that story is true, I have no idea. I do know that this is kind of how I feel right now. I’m under more pressure now than I have ever been in my life and I don’t know when it will let up. I just know it feels right to be doing what I am presently. It will all work out eventually, but in the mean time it’s so hard.
